How it fights

The ashmantle drinks the light. Once you come within 4 tiles of it, a cold grey ring of that size is drawn round it on the ground and fills for 0.75 s; if you are still inside when it is full, it drinks: your light falls to 50% of its radius, the ground beyond it goes dark and every monster out there is drawn only as a dim shape. A second ashmantle drinking at the same time darkens it further, but never below 34%. Step 4.5 tiles from it (its ring plus half a tile) and the light comes straight back. The dark itself does no damage, but in it you see a saltreel’s lane or a stoker winding up later than you would like. Its own chest-light is never dimmed, so it is the one figure you can always find: walk out of its ring, or cut through to it and kill it first (338 HP on floor 26, a 5-point base bite). At most 3 are alive at once, and it pays the most of its band to kill, an item 14% of the time before the floor’s loot multiplier.

Floor by floor

The same ashmantle gets tougher each floor: the floor multiplies its HP, bite and speed. An elite ashmantle has 3× the HP, gives 5× the XP and always drops at least a magic item plus 5 coins. “Share of waves” is the part of the floor’s wave monsters that roll as a ashmantle.
